Installation

Self-host the portal

Run the free, open-source TRIVLA portal and API on your own server in minutes — or skip the setup and use TRIVLA Cloud.

Portal & API

Install the Community portal

The Community portal is the control plane for your agents: sign-in, agent management, alerts, reporting, API keys, and license activation. It is free, open source, and runs entirely on your infrastructure. Paid features are unlocked with a license key from your TRIVLA account — the portal code is the same either way.

ℹ

Prefer not to host anything? Create an account on TRIVLA Cloud and skip straight to installing an agent.

Requirements

  • ✓ A 64-bit Linux server (2 vCPU / 4 GB RAM is plenty to start)
  • ✓ Docker Engine 24+ and the Docker Compose plugin
  • ✓ Outbound HTTPS (443) so the portal can validate licenses
  • ✓ A domain or IP you can point your browser and agents at

Step 1 — Download the portal

Grab the latest release archive from your account downloads page and unpack it:

bash
# Download and extract the Community portal
curl -fsSL https://releases.trivla.com/portal/latest/trivla-portal.tar.gz -o trivla-portal.tar.gz
tar -xzf trivla-portal.tar.gz
cd trivla-portal

Step 2 — Configure

Copy the sample environment file and set your secrets. The defaults work for a local trial; change the passwords and JWT secret before going to production.

bash
cp .env.community.example .env
# edit .env: set JWT_SECRET and (optionally) SEED_ADMIN_EMAIL / SEED_ADMIN_PASSWORD

Step 3 — Start it

Use the startup script (Debian/Ubuntu and RHEL/CentOS/Alma/Rocky). It installs Docker on first run if needed, creates .env, brings up the stack, and waits for the health check:

bash
chmod +x scripts/start.sh
sudo ./scripts/start.sh install-deps # once per server
./scripts/start.sh start
./scripts/start.sh status

Or start manually with Compose:

bash
docker compose up -d
docker compose ps # wait until services report healthy

The portal is now serving on port 4000. Put it behind your reverse proxy (e.g. https://portal.example.com) for production.

Step 4 — Log in

Open the portal in your browser and sign in with the default administrator that was created on first start:

Default login
Email: admin@trivla.local
Password: admin
⚠

Change this immediately. Go to Manage → Settings and set a strong password (and enable 2FA) right after your first login. The default admin is only created on a brand-new database.

Step 5 — Activate a license

From the portal, open Manage → Licenses:

  • ✓ Community (free): click Get free Community key to generate a key with the core feature set and free agent seats.
  • ✓ Professional / Enterprise: purchase a key from your account on trivla.com. Paste the key into your self-hosted portal and the paid features unlock instantly.
ℹ

Licenses are always issued and signed by TRIVLA, so your self-hosted portal stays in sync no matter where it runs. See pricing for what each plan includes.

Step 6 — Connect your agents

Point each agent at your portal and apply a license key, then install agents per platform:

/etc/trivla/agent.conf
[portal]
url = https://portal.example.com/api/v1
license_key = trvl_xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
